Dementia is caused by a number of different diseases. The majority of these diseases cause a build up of abnormal proteins in the brain, and as these diseases progress brain cells die and the brain starts to shrink. A brain scan allows us to take pictures of the brain to see if shrinking is taking place and to identify which regions of the brain are worst affected. The most severely affected regions often give a good indication of the particular disease that is causing the symptoms of dementia. We think we could do more with this information to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, and with your help we can prove it.Learn More
